Basement Refinishing 101

When it comes to expanding your home living space, one of the most effective ways to do it is to finish the basement. You can turn a full basement into an entire floor of extra living space. You may even be able to create bedrooms, install a kitchen, and add a bathroom. I created this site to share my experiences with basement renovations and construction. My hope is that sharing what I have learned will help others to see that it's easier than you think to finish the basement and create the space you have always envisioned in your home.

Important Tips For Eco-Friendly, Safe Cleaning Of Your Shingled Roof

Given that water often pools on a roof, it's not surprising to discover that mold and algae are common squatters there. Of course, that is in addition to the dirt and waste that might appear on your roof due to severe weather or high winds, which is why you need to have your roof professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Therefore, it's best to ask about safer and environmentally responsible ways to clean your roof, so that you can be sure the professionals who will ultimately perform the work do so in an appropriate manner.

Are The Cleaning Agents Safe For Your Yard, Trees, Pets, Kids, Etc?

Although you might have baked on mud, algae, or mold on your roof due to rain or other precipitation that occurred, the slope of a roof would normally prevent that from happening. As a result, the water and/or cleaning agents could go down your rain gutters or even just fall off the side of your roof. If that happens, it's important to know that the chemicals being used on your roof will be safe for everyone in your yard if they were to escape.

If you have kids or pets that spend time in the yard, or if you have any type of greenery in your yard, it's essential to use only cleaners that are safe, effective and will not contaminate that which with it comes into contact. That includes the ground since chemicals that leak into the soil can quickly make their way into your area water supply. Fortunately, some professional roof cleaners use chemicals that are designed not to run off, so you should ask what will be used in your home.

Do They Pressure Wash?

Unfortunately, many people and even some professionals have been known to opt for high-pressure power washing, which could damage the asphalt or fiberglass shingles on your roof. A better method involves cleaning by hand, using clean towels, sponges, and safe chemicals, including specific bleach products. You should also expect an in-depth examination of the roof since it is not recommended to clean a roof that is not intact, as new damage could occur.

If aggressive power washing is provided, you might find that you need to replace your roof sooner than you expected. Even worse, since the damage occurred due to a deliberate act and not a failure of the roof itself, your warranty on the roof might not be applicable.

In conclusion, safely cleaning the shingles on your roof isn't always the easiest activity and doing so in an eco-friendly manner can make it even more challenging. As a result, you should be aware of the questions listed above when you're interviewing roof cleaning experts and you expect them to do the job in the way that you prefer.
